For many people, the sun is more than a source of life and light: Soaking in its rays makes you tan.

"A tan makes you look sexy and glamorous, and thin, too," said Kate White, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine. "It contours the body, and it really is something that started back with the California look ... as celebrities started to wear skimpier bathing suits, and wear skimpier clothes on the runway."

Having a suntan meant you had a lot of leisure time on your hands, power, money ... you could vacation in the tropics.

How on earth does tanning make you thin? That is utterly ridiculous, unless you tan so many hours per day that you have no time to eat!

Its true, the depth of color brings out the dimension. Its why body builders tan. A dimensional surface looks smaller than a flat surface. Also darker colors appear smaller to the eye. I don't think skinny fixes cancer though. I don't think I would ever let myself say that for a mag. Its like saying smoking is a great hunger buster.

Tanning does not actually make you thin though, just as wearing all black won't either.
