I use a Revlon brand flat iron I got at Walmart (I doubt it cost very much) on my thick, somewhat wavy hair. I straighten and curl with it on the hottest setting, and it works great.

Before I use it, I spray my damp hair with a Frizz Ease product to protect my hair from heat, and then I blow dry my hair dry, and then I use the iron to style.

I get my hair cut and colored every 8-12 weeks; I haven't had any significant damage to my hair from the heat and coloring. I typically wash my hair every 2-3 days, and use the iron in between for minor touch ups as needed. If I had to wash my hair daily and then use all that heat daily, I think my hair would get pretty damaged, and I might want a higher quality flat iron.
