Do you live with them? Is that religious thing?
You need to be you. You should follow your desires. Be adventurous. Live a bit!

Take small steps and start wearing what YOU like or is the whole town like that?
Maybe move out that small minds community? It seems that you're missing a lot in your life.

Didn't read all 12 pages of posts but, for the OPs first post, I'd go with what a friend of my dad used to say. "Opinions are like rear ends. Everybody has one. If you want to do something you're not sure others agree with, the only one that needs to agree with what you want to do is you."

It's not a religious thing nor do I live with them.

Honestly I think I've been repressing myself in some ways between the judgmental relatives and some of the jobs I've had in stuffy corporate environments with dress codes. I know my last few employers would have frowned on earrings.

Yeah I have to agree it's better to take small steps than do everything at once.

I wouldn't say the whole town is like that. I went to a men's clothing store in town and told the girl working there about my "makeover" and she thought it was cool, and recommended some items. She had a double hoop nose piercing on one side and I asked her about it. I then told her about my desire to pierce my ears and she asked why I haven't done it yet. So here's this attractive girl significantly younger than me who has her nose pierced and also has a tattoo encouraging me to go through with the piercings and here I am overly concerned about what others think. Perhaps I should hire her to be my fashion coach lol. Changes like this are easier when you have support and/or someone (like a friend or girlfriend) nudging oneself in that direction.

Didn't realize that sandal shopping was so difficult. I was looking for sandals that meet the following criteria:

Fit Well
Comfortable
Arch Support
Look at least halfway decent, can be dressed down or up a bit

I went to 7 or 8 stores. It seemed that most of the sandals that looked good were uncomfortable or had no arch supprt. The sandals that were comfortable looked odd or just plain dorky. The only sandals I could find were a bit pricey but hit all of my requirements.

or

I didn't really care for Birkenstocks at first but have warmed up to them. Not sure they're a great choice for the guy. I think the flip flop style probably looks better on me but the Birks seem to be the best built sandals.

I picked up both but think I will return one of them. Any feedback welcome.

The questions and angst about sandals is going for years now. You listen to advice but are too anxious to follow.
Normally, no guy would repeatedly ask and agonize about that. So, why sandals and flipflops are such a big deal in your circles?

Just go and buy a pair that fits. And wear it. Stop worrying about what others say. Stop repressing yourself. It's not an end of the world! Its just sandals!
You are 40+ y.o. not 14. It's time that you decide for yourself: you want wear sandals? Wear them! Flipflops? Get them! Piercing? No problem!

If this is such an overwhelming dilemma, then you most likely have bigger problem on your hands and need professional help.

^^^ Seriously?? You started asking about sandals and flipflops in 2015... Got plenty advice.

I would not say it is an overwhelming dilemma. I went through a similar but more abbreviated makeover phase several years back and posted some threads on the topic. That's when I first started wearing them. I since ended up developing several cases of "plantar fasciitis", which may have been caused by the flip flops I was wearing at the time (which lacked support) or they may have just aggravated it so I quit wearing them for awhile This is why I'm more recently so hung up on finding the "right" ones that have sufficient support to avoid getting that condition again. Many sandals and flip flops have little support. I think back then I was thinking aesthetically but now have these other factors to consider.

I have trouble with other types of shoes as well. It is difficult to find a good fit and am almost always in between sizes. Forget about buying shoes online, I need to try them on in person.

Not all of those threads are mine btw. Another guy recently started a related thread and mentioned being self conscious wearing sandals:

https://www.city-data.com/forum/fash...feel-self.html

Another guy started a thread the other day about summer clothes and what women like.

At the end of the day, it's about wanting to look our best. If women do it, why shouldn't men? I've become more fashion conscious in recent years but there is still room for improvement.

That said, you are right about being overly concerned about what others think and it's time to get past that. Thanks for the advice.

My husband was an oil and gas engineer - pretty "manly" trade. LOL So for his 50th birthday, I treated him to a pedicure among other things. He was very self conscious about getting it done, but while he was there, he saw another guy he worked with in their "manly" field, getting a pedicure too! LOL

Do what you want to do - everyone else is.

Here's something I would NOT recommend for anyone who is squeamish though - a type of integrative massage, I think it may be a Thai massage, where you have to wear workout clothes and you get on a mat and it's very interactive. LOL I treated him to that type of massage too, and he was totally weirded out!

Too bad. Thai massage is very beneficial. Great to relieve psychological stress (lowers anxiety and increases a systemic feeling of calm)

LOL.....of all the places to run into a co-worker! Did your husband ever go back?

I went to another town for mine and come to find out, the lady who did it lives in the same small town as me . Then later she said that her boyfriend works in an industry in which a family member works in, which is likely the same employer. In any case, I was concerned she might go home and tell her boyfriend who might tell my family member (assuming they do work together) who would likely broadcast it to the rest of the family. She did a great job and was friendly but am debating whether to go back or not.
