In the mid 1980s, my husbands business took off, and the first really expensive thing he bought for me was a fur coat. We were in Toronto and walked into a furriers shop. I could have chosen anything, but I chose a full length raccoon, thinking it would be more casual, so I’d get more use out of it. I think it cost about $2500.

We lived in Ohio, and the winters were cold, and the fur stigma hadn’t kicked in yet, so I wore it quite a bit. We left Ohio in 2010, and I hadn’t worn the coat in years…it was never cold enough. Now, I live in GA and it’s never going to be cold enough, but I think there is a loosening of the fur stigma. The old coats are regarded more as heirlooms, and there’s no point in mourning the loss of animals that were long dead before we ever got fur coats.

I think wearing the existing fur coats honors the animals far more than just discarding them. New, no. Vintage, ok.

Anyway, I will always hang onto it as a symbol of my husband wanting to do something nice for me.

If you have one you don't want, you might consider donating it to an animal rehabber. Apparently, it can be used to make orphaned babies more comfortable.

Fur coats are functional for those living in extreme cold weather, and are handed down to the next generations.
My inlaws live in Calgary, and they wear one to keep warm not a fashion statement.
