Kids these days got no idea how good they have it. Why we had to go buy indigo colored shrink-to-fit Levi’s and stonewashed them our own selves and then we got busy sewing on patches and embroidered strawberries and took out the hem so they’d drag on the ground. Our parents hated the look of them but were glad it kept us gainfully occupied.

Bumping up.
I do alterations to my clothes. I often have to take in a bit at the shoulder so the bust line falls right. Makes a big difference.
I just shortened my shorts above my knee cap and they look so much smarter.
I put in darts at the waist.
Those who sew where do you get your fabric?

^^^Some Walmart's have a selection (not large) of fabrics but Joann's is a chain that has a really nice selection including upholstery fabric which I love! I cover ottomans, benches and pillows. I've recovered a few chairs that have removable cushions and I've made drapes for almost every house I've lived in.

One other thing, when my kids were young I taught both of them (a son and a daughter) how to sew on a button. I thought it was especially important that my son knew how to do this and when he was living on his own he told me was glad he knew how to do it. His college roommates where impressed! I also taught both of them the basics of household tools like the different kinds of screwdrivers and how to change out simple items in the house. It's amazing how many kids don't know how to do simple home repairs.
