Imagine having only one dress - in the 1940s, when you weren't allowed to wear pants to work!
Marianne Steiner, Refugee Who Found a New Life in New York, Dies at 101
Every day, Marianne Steiner wore the same black dress to her job tending window displays at Saks Fifth Avenue, but with one element altered: a different collar or cuffs, or a new decorative flourish from a scarf or broach.
She didn’t want her colleagues to know that she owned only one dress. It was the eve of World War II, and Ms. Steiner and her family were Jewish refugees from Germany. https://www.wseetonline.com/rs/2021/...k-dies-at-101/
I know a couple guys who only had one suit when they started their jobs, back in the 70's and 80's. I'm assuming most firsts paychecks usually go towards work wear.
Okay, but I don't think it's comparable. Woman have always had larger wardrobes with more noticeable difference in outfits, while men traditionally wear similar suits in neutral colors.

You are right. It's not comparable. It is amazing, especially considering her job was fashion related. I can not imagine having one dress!
During the depression my mom who was born in 1920 only had one dress good enough to wear to school in the 8th grade and one old one to wear at home while she hand washed the other one for the next day.
Interesting what people used to do back then. Today, instead of one good quality dress, we may have a dozen cheap dresses from Old Navy or someplace similar.
I have a long hand knotted pearl strand. It’s an amazing well made fake strand.
Back when I worked at the bank, we had a number of nicer social events to go to. I wore those pearls every time differently. And a couple of people asked me why I had so many pearl necklaces.
It’s a testament to how people look but don’t really see.
Most of the women working in the department stores in those days had to wear simple black dresses as a uniform.
