When buying something online, do you make sure to read up about the brand to make sure they follow safe & ethical practices and don’t align with unusually dangerous working conditions or use forced child labor in 3rd world countries ?
I try to do my best to make sure that the apparel I buy is ethically sourced. Does anyone here attempt to do the same as well ? I know it isn’t as easy as it seems, because big apparel has complex supply chains.
I’ve seen children lose their lives in India because some big apparel company decided they could exploit them to make a quick buck . It sometimes surprises me how inhuman some corps can be just to show good profits.
Nope. I guess I'm a terrible human being. I don't have the bandwidth to spend as much time researching a pair of jeans as I do a car.
The Corporations which do this knowingly are the terrible ones, not us humans. It’s not possible for us to trace all this, and I certainly have been guilty of not thinking about my purchases in the past. Blockchain should help solve some of these issues though.
I do what I can, within reason to make sure my purchases are in line with my personal ethics.
To be honest these days most companies are very image-conscious and will address concerns in appropriate ways.
Perfect example- American Apparel- not entirely without controversy, but a company that sold high quality merchandise and paid their workers fairly. Last I heard the company is being re-structured. I felt great buying their products.
Patagonia- great garments that last forever. Functional business model.
Nike- one of the main employers in the state of Oregon. That has to count for something.
I've been able to avoid apparel made in China for years. I shop in person and I look at labels. Chico's has many things made in the USA (haven't been there for awhile, though- I buy few clothes). I've also bought on-line from Amour Vert and Karen Kane, both of which have things made in the USA. My sandals are all Birkenstock (Germany) and my boots are all made in the USA. Yes. I pay more but the products last longer, too.
