That old rule was largely for shoes. And remember, there is "white" and "winter white". The latter was what one wore after labor day. Not a stark white, but a slightly creamier version. But these days, comfort and style are the rule.
i thought it was cant wear white pants after memorial day out of respect for those who died in pearl harbor (the navy uniforms had white pants) ?
Considering Memorial Day is the start of the summer, this explanation makes zero sense. Even if it was after Labor Day, that holiday isn't for remembering our service men and women as Memorial Day is.
To the OP, I live in South Florida and wear white jeans all year long.
I have two pairs of blue jeans. I probably have 40 pair of white jeans. I wear them every day.
The rule remains in my house. No white (other than winter white) after labor day and can wear white again for Easter. My friends further north would wear white for Derby Day (first saturday in May) and those further north still would wait until Memorial Day.
This rule applied only to old money elites that played tennis, owned yachts and held debutante balls on the lawn in the summer. You can imagine these folks decked out in their white linen suits in the late 19th and early 20th century. The working class never wore white anyway, it's an impractical color for most people.
Today, it really doesn't matter. Who really wears an all-white outfit these days?
I was curious about this rule. I don't usually have a lot of white, but as it turns out I bought white jeans and a white pleated skirt this year. So just curious if this rule is still observed.
If it makes a difference, I live in NJ and commute to the city every day.
Not anymore. The fashion industry came up with the concept of "winter white" back in the 90's. Probably, in theory, you're supposed to retire your summer whites after Labor Day, still, but then you can break out white woolens after the first snowfall, or something. Winter White is now part of the winter holiday season palette.
