I am willing to guess that the OP will not be interested in "Melissa McCarthy" jeans given that he's a guy with a 42 inch waist.

I am not quite as big around the middle (and I am a guy) but I have thick thighs and a "generous" butt and Levi's always cut me in the crotch. I have been happy with some Lee jeans I recently got. They say "Relaxed fit straight leg" inside the waistband. They are cut generously enough to have some room for my business inside. Give them a try. I wear a 36/30 size.

As a data point, back in the day when you couldn't buy dress pants with pleats, I routinely split dress pants from stem to stern by bending over or squatting down. I was never happier than when pleated dress pants became available again in the mid 80s.

I heard of something called "Pajama jeans" and I'm thinking of trying them myself. They supposedly come in all sizes, styles, colors, and are stretchy. Also reasonably priced. Check it out online. I agree, why be uncomfortable.

Right now I am somewhat overweight which just makes the situation even worse than when I'm not. Even when I'm not somewhat overweight, I still have a significantly thicker waist and mid-section than most men. Right now I have a pair of Lee modern series straight fit, straight leg jeans model L342 in a size 42x32. It isn't easy finding jeans in a regular store with a 42-inch waist as most are in the 30-something-inch range.
Is there perhaps a different cut of jean and model that is better suited to my thicker waist and mid-section that I should look for and try. Perhaps a different kind of denim material would help too? Should I start shopping at a big-and-tall mens store? I always seem to be right on the edge having to go to one.
Thanks
SOLUTION:

Buy all of your jeans at Nordstrom. They have FREE alterations on anything purchased in-store. They hire professional tailors so what they will do is take your measurements, then alter whatever jeans you buy to fit you PERFECTLY. I was always a jeans-are-jeans type dude (but love my Buffalo, D-Squared, AG Graduate and Diesel jeans) but when you have them altered/tailored to totally fit your body it makes a HUGE difference in not only comfort, but looks.

To me, its a total no-brainer to get jeans at Nordstrom. Especially if you are having problems/issues with comfort and fit with straight off the rack jeans. Try it. You'll never go back to just plain off the rack.
