Precisely! I have no idea why people go to the gym when Lindy Hop, Swing, Viennese Waltz, Polka etc. are a lot more fun... Even the lessons are more fun and when all is said and done you have a valuable skill to show for it.

It seems sad that the OP and some of the other posters don't seem to understand that the fashion of the time was a real societal and cultural statement. Oh, and that loose silhouette that was criticized was first designed by none other than Coco Chanel, which my 7-year old did an extensive study and project on in 1st grade.

The Nostalgic Series: Coco Chanel 1920s - Anna Nuttall

And Oh. My. Goodness....The expat American writers of that age, all decamped in Paris; Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, plus the great Gertrude Stein. So much history is greatness wrapped up in a few brief decades. The Lost Generation all pushed back against societies norms and it showed up in fashion, art, thought, writing.

France in the 1920's, Post-Belle Epoque

And best movie about Paris in the 1920's, full of fashion, art, beauty... imho, is Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris'

And they drank Chartreuse. I'd love to have been there.

I think the dresses were gorgeous with the beading and quality and very in for that time period. Every decade has some sort of fashion that someone will dislike. I think the women were brave for changing their attire so drastically as soon as they could.

I think the beading and beautiful materials were still for the rich.. but it gave many women a chance to make their own clothes and be stylish when fashions before this were for only the rich...

I wore a flapper inspired dress to my sister-in-law's wedding. I managed to find an appropriate shoe, but no cloche. Picture hat it was. I owned a few vintage purses at the time. Pearls. I got to be Daisy for a few hours.
