Let me start by saying that my "standard uniform" at work is a nice button down shirt and a pair of Banana Republic chinos. I've been buying/wearing these pants for years as I can just purchase them without even trying them on. I'll buy 'em, wear for a few years till they fall apart/get stained and or too short, then repeat.

Anyway, I usually buy the standard khaki/grey/blue/black/brown colors. I popped into my local BR yesterday while waiting for some takeout to be ready and noticed they had some new colors, red being among them. I was tired of wearing the same old colors so thought I would try the red ones out (I'm a man if that matters). They weren't bright red, kinda medium, not red but not maroon either. A little darker than a tomato lol.

Well I get home and pull the pants out of the bag. My wife sees them and she's like "red pants? Oh HELL NO!" So I ask, what's the consensus on red pants? I tried them on with the shirt that I thought I would wear with them and it did kinda look like I was headed to the rodeo. I guess she was right.

If you feel uncomfortable when you are wearing them, then don't. If you feel fine, put a dark navy jacket with them and enjoy them. I don't feel red trousers are work appropriate though, unless maybe if you work in graphic arts.

If you want a new color, go maroon. Bright red pants were a thing for men in Sweden for a few years. Sounds like it's trying to jump the ocean. We don't need it. Maybe the Canucks wouldn't mind trying it, they could let us know if it works out for them.

That's kind of a bummer your wife was dumping on your trying something new, and something that YOU would be wearing, not her.

My opinion is if you like them, wear them. Make sure they fit you really well. A dark navy jacket like someone suggested would look good I think.

Red pants for men are fairly controversial, and suddenly showing up in a pair when you've basically worn Dockers forever can be a jolt for those around you.

An office environment can be just like jr high. I am constantly amazed that my 50-year-old husband get occasional comments on his appearance from co-workers. He's a conservative dresser, never venturing much from the "blue/khaki/solid-or-plaid-shirt" uniform. And he's the boss! Some people just don't know when to shut up.

With red pants, the shoes and neutralizing the top half are key. Your wife seems to have made her feelings known, but I think that as long as you didn't look like this:

... you're fine.

They sound nice to me. If you like them wear them. Who cares what your wife says.

Your location says Austin, that is a pretty hipster place. Wear them around the house for a few days then make a decision. I just bought a dress -paisley with a lot of red. I am not a red girl. After a day of wearing it around the house -- I love it!!!

I love red chinos, especially with a navy or gray blazer and white button down shirt or a navy/blue button down shirt by itself.

Great look and you really stand out.

I would not unless I had a 28 or 30 inch waist( I am 34 ) I like plaid pants but think they are not flattering on any normal waisted man. I wear mostly khaki, navy or dark green as well as jeans. Of course, suit matching pants.
