For a couple of seasons mixing patterns has been "in." I have been leery of this trend. The closest I have gotten is leopard print shoes with jeans and a graphic sweater in camel. And a patterned blouse with a big dose of camel and black. Leopard shoes are basically neutrals. But wearing patterns close together? Sounds scary.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a great graphic black and ivory scarf. I was on the fence about, it was a nice print and very nice fabric. But it wasn't a solid color and I wear patterns often. Over the weekend I walked past the store it was on sale. I decided to get it, and would try to make it work.

I wore it over the weekend with a solid dress. Easy peasy.

Today I went out of my box, I was wearing a grey leopard print dress and added the scarf. The big graphic pattern in a similar color pallete didn't clash at all.

I might try it with a few more patterned outfits. It is a very cozy scarf.

Have you jumped on the pattern mixing bandwagon?

I am a total chicken with patterns. Whether it's clothes or home decor, I can only do a couple colors and maybe one pattern. I like how mixed patterns can look and admire other people's taste, but my brain just doesn't go there. I can't do "artfully messy" either.

I can mix patterns in home decor without a problem, but have a harder time mixing patterns with clothes.

I generally don't care for outfits with mixed patterns. When I wear patterned clothing, it is always a combination of one bold pattern with the rest all solids.

Some people can pull off the multiple-pattern look, but it doesn't work for me.

I am glad I do not spend so much time on clothing, patterns, trends and such. Put on some comfortable well fitting clothing that is appropriate for the event and weather and move on to things in life that are actually important.

I was literally coming on to post the same thing, more or less.

I love the look of mixing patterns when it's done well. Unfortunately, I don't really know how to pull it off either but would love to start trying it more.

Today, I was a little leery, even though my pattern mixing wasn't that crazy. I have a cute plaid skirt that I haven't worn yet, It's navy, cream, and brown. I finally found a top that I think works with it but had no idea what shoes to pair. I tried brown boots, it didn't look good. Black was out of the question, looked horrible. The only thing I could find were leopard print flats. I wasn't sure if the plaid and the leopard would clash, but I didn't have a choice and that's what I wore today.

Just wondering people's thoughts on what I mixed!

I can't do it; reminds me to much of a gaudy, shabby-chic bed-and-breakfast, with ruffles and porcelain dolls leering at me. I'm more into pops of color than patterns, anyway.

I understand. I think it looks crazy about 80% of the time. When I see the magazine article praising the contrasting patterns I am not so sure.

I did mix again today with the same scarf, a dress with abstract stripes. But I have a pink sweater over the dress. The stripes are horizontal on the dress and the scarf is vertically printed. It seems ok.

It sounds like the plaid and leopard should work well. Particularly if it is a subtle plaid.

I find the examples you are describing very common in Italy. It is the art of making things that don't seem to match work so well that once you see them together it seems like they were always meant to be together.
