Just to look hip or cool in that casual way. It's not as new as many younger guys may think though. I first saw it during the early 1970's.

JD Salinger described his main character doing that in The Catcher in the Rye in 1950. Not a baseball cap, but a hunter's cap with side flaps. (Search on Images of "Holden Caulfield" to see what I mean).

Or maybe it has no purpose; they just like it that way...

I guess it is to protect you from the sun. But someone do think it is cool to wear a baseball cap backwards.

I'm a painting contractor (and female) and when I'm painting ceilings or anything up high, I turn my baseball cap backwards because otherwise the bill impedes my vision.
So that's one practical reason.
