I love Halloween and we throw a costume party at our house every year. But it is often disappointing to go to the costume stores and see the selection. The men & boys section has such a variety of options. The women & girls section is sexy witch, sexy nurse, sexy knight, sexy cat, sexy cop, etc. As if that's all women are for, while men can be all of these different characters.
At our yearly Halloween party we just have one friend in the bunch who always comes in an extremely revealing, "sexy" costume. She looks very out of place and always seems miffed that she's the only one who "went there" with her costume. She acts surprised that none of the other women go that route. But I'm not surprised she dresses that way for Halloween. She is very conformist / brainwashed by our culture. She has received the message loud and clear that womens' only purpose is to look "sexy" and she subscribes to the Mean Girls philosophy of Halloween being a night for girls to dress like "sluts".
My sister, who is a large gal, always goes for the skimpy costumes. She has to make her own, because you can't find "naughty cop" or "sexy pirate wench" in her size.
Well honestly I feel that adults dressing up for Halloween is immature and silly no matter what they wear. I feel Halloween and the dressing up part is more for children then for adults. It's cool if you are going to take your kids trick or treating...to get into the spirit and dress up for their benefit. Maybe if you are going to make some sort of haunted house for the children then that's okay as well. However adults dressing up for other adults I feel is just silly and immature. I left Halloween behind in middle school and now am perfectly content to just hand out candy to neighborhood kids and let them enjoy it.
I say it depends on the situation and person themselves.
For a "religious" or "kid friendly" event, NOPE; but for a fun night at an adults only party, why not?
Exactly, you have to think about who's going to be there. I don't like how most of the section for women's costumes is taken up by sexy versions of just about everything, though I admit that some of them are cute. Still, they're not for kids or for wearing around kids.
