Here is a pretty good article I read today. Perhaps some of you have already read it. I think it's an interesting read and it am not surprised in the least bit by this. Anyone with a basic understanding of light and photography techniques knows how important lighting is. Anyone who has ever flexed their abs in front of their bathroom mirror knows it too! (I might be guilty of this last one. )

I think this belongs here instead of the fitness forum because I believe it speaks more to style and image than actual fitness.

Saw and read that article too, no surprise. Along with photography and lighting you can also add makeup & clothing.

Wow, I'm amazed at how different his stomach looks.

That was really interesting, thanks.

Being on the photoshop end of things, I tend to assume that's the trick, and I know professional photography goes a long way, but just some regular old lighting tricks seem to do it also.

That's such a major difference I wonder if his hydration level was varying during the photo-taking period. Many men temporarily starve themselves to shed water weight and look as "ripped" as possible for photographs and competitions.

ABC 20/20 did its own version of the "illusion." It's probably on the ABC website now. It didn't explain things any better, but the most dramatic difference involved a guy who was selected while eating and nobody appeared to be consuming anything after selection. In other words, some of the magic is probably from loss of fluid and gas.

Don't be amazed. In the first photo, he's slouching and letting his gut hang.

In the second photo, he's standing up straight, sucking in his gut, flexing, has baby oil strategically applied, and the lighting is from above.
