Ok, at Hooters, everything is about "image" and they have these image classes and an image handbook. The image handbook also tells you should exercise and healthy eating choices you can make for your shift meal at Hooters. Some managers are really into different things. Some are really all about perfectly coiffed hair and others are obsessed with diet. I had a manager go on a diet obsessed rampage and if you ordered any food she deemed unhealthy for your shift meal she'd comp it on the computer with "fatty" typed in above the 50% comp.

Hooters is all about the girl next door, sporty image so to speak but if she glamoured up. That means long, straight hair, styled and worn down at all times. Natural black hair isn't considered "styled" to them. There are a lot of image rules, you can only have one set of piercing in your ear, no visible piercing anywhere else, the only earring you can wear are studs. No visible tattoos. You can't have any nail polish any darker than baby pink, in fact baby pink is the only acceptable color really. You cannot show your belly button unless you're wearing an approved crop top. Your orange shorts have to be worn high waisted even girls try to cut them. There's a right way to scrunch your tube socks and a wrong way. Your white sneakers have to be perfectly white (a nightmare in a restaurant). It is recommended that you wear a full face, but you HAVE to wear mascara and lipgloss.

When you're a black Hooters girl you know that you are pursuing an image not about you in so many ways and there are constant reminders. You have to wear "suntan" hose even though it's not your skin color.

I'm one of those people who is really grossed out by hair in my food, and I find the idea of a sever with long, hair worn down kinda icky....

My husband and I went out to eat once (not at Hooters, but a very expensive seaside restaurant) - the server had really long hair and after she put my plate own leaned across the table to give my husband his entree and in doing so her hair totally dragged across my plate - I said something and she denied it until I pointed out the sauce from my coconut shrimp on the ends of her hair.. BLEH..

This sounds a lot like military uniform regs (at least back when I was in). The military didn't allow visible tatttos, one piercing per ear, you had to wear black socks, underwear had to be flesh colored, etc.

As for the hair, in the military braids were (finally) allowed, but they had to conform to the same hair regs as everyone else. Off the collar, no ponytails, the braids had to be a certain diameter and the hair color had to match the person's natural hair color (no purple braids, for example). Afros, twists, and dreds were not allowed.

The military can seperate you for not adhering to weight standards.

Military members didn't complain about uniform regs (to my knowledge); it was just a part of the job. I wonder what point the author was trying to make. I didn't consider myself any less black due to the uniform regs I had to follow. The woman knew what she was getting into.

Well the military is about conformity, Hooters is about image. An image that most black women in America do not fit.

It's just a fact, you recognize it, you move on.

To be fair, it's an image that most women of any race don't fit.

Also, when you are hired at Hooters (or open a new store, I've worked at 3, and started 1), they take a picture of you in your uniform at hire and put it in your file. They let you know this is your "image" shot. They will say verbatim, "If for any reason you no longer fit the image standards that you had at hire, you can be dismissed." No one will say exactly what those image standards are, but they beat around the bush by letting you know that a healthy diet and exercise can help you maintain "image". Even the slower amongst the crowd will get the point. When I opened a store, we had to go to image classes for two weeks. So every weekday for two weeks I heard about hair, nails and makeup. And I was getting paid (though not very much, waiting for the store to open). Bonded me with the other girls, we had some great experiences.

I'm an African American women (20 years old) and I want to apply at hooters. I usually have my hair long and straight, wavy or curled! But now I have in two strand twist if you don't know what those are they kinda look like small braids but much cuter. I want to apply to hooters but should I wait until I take these twist out so I can have a look that they are familiar with?
