Are rhinestone headbands to over the top to wear to work?
I wore one to work and two of my male co-workers said they thought I was wearing a tiara. I didn't want people to get the impression that I think of myself as a princess, so I took it off. But I really like it, and I want to wear it. I just don't know what type of events it would be appropriate for.
I'd say it depends on where you work. What are the dress codes? Do they have casual Fridays (or casual summers?)? Is it more male dominated or female? How long have you worked there? If you have established a solid reputation, I doubt a rhinestone headband could change folks' minds about you. If you're new or if you are trying to prove yourself, you might dress a bit more conservatively, like in the interview process.
I wouldn't let those guys get to you, though. I have an oversized linked-bracelet with a charm on it, and some of my guy friends asked if I was Mr. T. Just guys being guys.
I think its better if you get stones that are similar to your haircolor. Like if you were a blonde go with a dark champagne. Brown go with chocolate. Deep Brown/black go with steel grey or black stones.
If its small and understated I think you can get away with it if you really like it. You can always wrap a thin ribbon around it to tone it down and make it look like its part of the original piece.
I've worked at this company for 5 years, and it's pretty casual here. The men in my department wear mostly T-shirts and jeans to work. Only those in the sales department dress conservatively.
I don't think I'll wear that headband again, it just attracted too much attention!
I have a few headbands that have rhinestones/are glittery/beribboned with shiny material. I wear them to work sometimes, but, honestly, they're very thin, and not extremely noticeable. I also wear rhinestone earrings...not dangly, chandelier earrings, but smaller, sparkly ones. I don't typically wear sparkly headbands together with sparkly jewelry, though.
Unless you boss pulls you aside and says, "no" why not have a little fun?
p.s. I noticed you said it was men who mentioned them. There are men with NO fashion sense on these things. Take a look at how they dress. Unless they're knocking you out with their own style, pay no attention to them.
