That is, two pairs of dress shoes to go with everything in your wardrobe for the next five years or so. If that were the case, what would you choose in styles, colours, heels, and designers (optional)?
Remember, those two pairs of shoes would be the only things you have to wear on your feet for the next five years when you go out to dinner, meetings, get-togethers, dates, etc., so Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, or Christian Louboutin might not be a good choice in less-than-showy occasions.
The same two I always buy and wear til they fall apart. One pair of Capezio Manhattan Character shoes in black, and another pair in ivory. Both 2-inch heels.
I think I would choose one pair of ballet flats in black that could be worn with everything, and would go both casual and dressy - so in a nice leather, with stylish lines. No bows, or gathers, or any other trim. Just good lines, good leather, and in a nice black.
And a pair of strappy sandals - also in black leather - maybe with an ankle strap? They could be worn as dress shoes in winter, and as both dressy and casual in summer. I live in Southern California, and wear sandals year-round. A great-looking pair of black strappy, high-heeled sandals with a little black dress is perfectly appropriate at the dressiest occasions, year-round, here.
Since both pairs of shoes would be black, I would have to make sure all my clothes worked with black shoes - but that's not that hard. It might mean I had to avoid pastel sun dresses in summer - since black sandals with a light blue dress might not look all that great - but black sandals work great with most prints, and most darker colors - so it would take some thought to make it work, but it wouldn't be too difficult.
That said, it sure is nice not to be limited to just two pairs of shoes every five years. I'm grateful to have more choices!

They look very comfortable. I've always thought of Capezio as dance shoes only, but if you wear them all the time, evidently they would work very well in other occasions too.

You're putting a lot of thoughts into the hypothetical shoes; I thank you for the input. I posed the question for my own selfish reason: I'm getting rid of excess shoes (did the same thing with handbags five years ago) and keeping only the essential ones.
I've always worn loafers and low-heel pumps, so I am going to keep one of each. My wardrobe is mostly monochrome -- black and white -- so black shoes would work. The colourful tops are sweaters and scarves, and since I knit them myself, I have total control on the colours. Now, what would I do with the white/ivory/beige skirts?
2 pair of quilted Chanel flats. A pair black and the other pair beige
For some reason, I've never liked the quilted Chanel on anything -- shoes, handbags, or jacket. I love Ferragamo and Bally loafers though, have lived with them for decades.
