No, this is a straight up question and real, reputable spas....Typical massages I have had run anywhere from $60 to $90. I just usually tip $20, but didn't know if that was good.
Believe it or not, not even implying funny business.
I recently went to a chinese foot massage place where its half foot massage and half body massage. I tipped the masseuse 24% and the lady at the desk made a really sad face and said 'ohhhhh' and admonished me for not giving more. I felt a little insulted and i won't go back there anymore, i don't like to be bullied on tips, they should be greatful for ANYTHING extra you give.
I would have given a little more if the massage was amazing, but this massage was just average, so they give an 'average' tip.
I consider a massage a medical treatment, I don't go otherwise. And I only use a practitioner with her/his own office and a degree.
So, I tip nothing. Like I do not tip my doctor, dentist, acupuncturist, etc.
At a feel-good place I would probably feel obliged to, but I don't go to them.
That's fine. The tips are mainly for therapists who work for spas, etc. Typically, they get paid half or less what the "house" is charging, so a tip is to help bring the pay up to par. Those who have their own office are charging full rate, in other words, there's no employer cut, so they don't need a tip, unless they're charging discount rates.
