You were probably pretty close, if I remember that gravel pit isn't too far from the top. Assuming it was the correct road, it only goes one place and ends at the parking lot to the radar dome.

yes, I'm sure the radar maintenance crew must keep the road open all the way to the top.

Actually, it is a State maintained right of way up to the entrance of the radar site. Of course just because it is a State right of way doesn't mean it gets plowed in a timely manner!

The gravel pit we stayed in was at the base of the hill. We ended up on what appeared to be nothing more than a snowmachine trail up top, so I'm not sure we were in the right place. I tried using yahoo maps to get directions and that got us nowhere.
The lights were not out that well anyway. But the next night at Chena was spectacular.

I think that Gravel Pit, may have been what was an old gold mine there if you were in the right area.

Neat photos of the lights!

Brownie points for such comments you will not get.

Murphy Dome has a gravel road, but a good grade for driving. Coming down from Ester Dome can be quite the experience...that is one steep road. Darn good views from the top though.

I used to drive up there during both the day and night quite a bit when we lived there from '04-'07. Never had a problem with the road and I was driving an AWD Honda CR-V. I think almost any car or truck, AWD or not could do it.
