Hello,

I received a job offer at Fort Wainwright, but before accepting it I need to figure out if I can afford to move there. I am kind of confused about COLA and all of the calculators that I have tried do not answer my questions. Hopefully some of you have been in this situation and can help.

The offer says that my base pay will be $34,545 per year plus 5.57% COLA. How is COLA calculated? Is the 5.57% taken from the $34,545 (about $1924)? Also is this the amount per pay period, or is it split up throughout the year? I'm lost on this . Thank you in advance for your help.

COLA is usually added into your paycheck however often you get paid. If you get paid every two weeks then the COLA will be $74 per paycheck

Even with the COLA added in it will be hard to do anything but survive with what you are being offered. Is the job with the federal government or a contractor working for the federal government. The reason I ask is if it is directly with the government you are getting hosed on the COLA. The government pays closer to 25% in Alaska.

Thanks for the reply.

The $34,545 is apparently including around 24% locality pay, and the COLA is extra. This job is as a government employee with Department of the Army starting as a GS-5 step 1.
