Is there such thing as too few reps for building muscle mass? I just want strength and bulk, and I do not care about cuts. Recently I started lifting dumbbells so heavy I can only manage three or four reps before my arms will do no more. Is that too few reps? If not, how few is too few?

What kind of exercise are we talking? It's kinda dependent on that.

When I do dumbell presses for chest, I'll start out by doing 6 reps, then 4-5, then about 3-4. Usually start out with flatbench and grab 100s, then 105s, then 110s. I still get a good burn and pump with 3-4, so I think its just fine. It works for me.

Shoulder press and upright rows mostly. A few bicep curls now and then.

110 lb. dumbbells? Are you a pro bodybuilder?

if you want to build strength & mass, i would forget about the dumbells & stick to using a 45lb barbell sets to do the 3 powerlifts- squats, benches & deadlifts for singles or triples.

No, I think he is referring to a 45lbs Olympic straight bar. Then stack your weights on each side.

Oh. BTW, where did that other poster find 110lb. dumbbells? The heaviest I've seen are 50lbs. each.

LOL He lifts at my house. ha ha. Well, I only have 100's. Bottom right of the pic below.... Oh yeah, I'll show it off whenever I get the chance.

Fwiw, I use dumbells a lot because I workout by myself. It's hard to get a loaded bar off your chest when you fail at the last rep. Just easier for me to use dumbells mostly. I do agree that barbells are mostly the way to go. That along with multi=joint/compound movements will get the results you're looking for. I do go down to 3 reps, but rarel, because I # don't like getting the chance of injury increased. That may happen with weights like that. You will eventually get stronger and those 3 or 4 reps will become 6 or 8.

There is room for those reps, but you do need a higher range at some point in your training as well. Good luck

Is that photoshopped or do you really have 100lb. dumbbells?
