Well, the US has not been a beacon of light in regards to this either, it is only in very recent US history that rights have been extended to gays, and we even seen what happened this week in Alabama regarding gay marriage.

Russia respects basic human rights, I have no idea where you people get that they do not. The gay agenda is not basic human rights. But of course this view is expected from people who actually never even lived there. Russia's human rights are not the best of course, but not that far detached from the West, especially from a historic perspective, and most countries int eh world are far worse yet receive much less criticism, some of those very close US allies. (try being openly gay in Saudi Arabia, or heck, try being a woman and want to go outside without wearing a sheet over your head and see how great your rights are).

Sodomite? Why does everyone assume all gay people are into anal? I have a gay friend who hates anal sex.

Anyway, what is this guy doing in Russia? It won't make much of an impact if that's what he is aiming for, a statement, since he is not a Russian anyway, he is just a foreigner being gay in their eyes.

LOL! Is this a comedy show?

The country that imprisons wealthy who do not follow Putin, poisons foreign journalists, kills ethnic minorities, shoots down passenger jets, invades neighboring countries, lies to the entire world, and ruthlessly controlled by a mentally ill dictator with Asperger's Syndrome, is now "respecting basic human rights"!

I think Boxus is in Russia and doesn't want to "disappear" in the middle of the night, like so many of his countrymen.

@NOLA. Yep, it's a comedy show. Though no one would ever say Alabama has been the easiest place to be gay in America, it is certainly better than most of Russia. Gay activist organizations have been present even in Alabama and Mississippi cities and large university campuses since before 1975. Though sodomy laws were on the books, they just weren't applied. Meanwhile, gay activist groups were given university space in larger public universities in Alabama and were able to independently publish and distribute newsletters (which probably could get into the hands of minors). All of this is illegal in Russia today, 2015, after Putin's "anti-gay progaganda" law. Everything in Alabama 40 years ago would be considered "propaganda" in Russia today, and you might face imprisonment or at the very least stiff fines if you did the same in Moscow now.

Boxus is really being disingenuous to even mention Alabama, which is now a place where gay marriage is legal. But even way back 40 years ago, Alabama was a much better place for gays than Russia. It's probably easier to be gay in Birmingham or Huntsville now than it is in a big city of 10 million like Moscow or 4 million like St. Petersburg. And don't even mention Russia's other large urban areas: Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Volgograd, etc. Much less to worry about down in 'Bama, and less paranoid for gays all around.

Have you seen the HIV rate in Russia? I think the homophobic mindset stems from gays association with the virus. Just my opinion though. No facts to back it. Just took the rate and the and the mindset and made the connection.

Russia has indeed the highest HIV rate percentage in Europe and the highest number in Europe. It has one the highest infection rates outside Sub-Saharan Africa.

In a country of 143 million people, roughly one million are HIV-positive. That means Russia has one of the highest percentages of HIV-infected people in the world outside sub-Saharan Africa.HIV and AIDS in Russia | Pulitzer Center

I used to work for a Health Insurance company in NYC that specializes in HIV.

There is a government program where qualified HIV people get a $10k a month HIV medication (cocktail) for free. Some of this medication reduces the risk of spreading HIV down to 1%. All of the medication hurts the liver, so HIV people now can live as long their liver lasts . People contracted HIV in their 30th are 80 now and are still kicking.

About 1/3 of HIV people we worked with, contracted it from man to man sex.
Another 1/3 comes from drugs, prisons and prostitution.
1/3 are normal people, nurse got it at work, some-one got a tattoo, never had sex with men or did drugs and have no idea how got it....
