Johnny Carson is the absolute best! Merv Griffin would be a close second!

Maher & Stewart for making political discourse sexy, but as far as traditional late-night talk shows, Carson was king and the rest followed his example.

I don't see how it is possible to name anyone other than Johnny Carson as the Best Late Night Host. Carson's unimaginable 30 year run as host of the Tonight show set a standard that every succeeding host has to be measured by.

After Carson, I voted for Steve Allen and Jack Parr because they were the pioneers that Carson succeed. My next vote would have to go to Letterman who broke away from the Allen/Parr/Carson mode and brought in the acerbic and sardonic comedy that has set the tone for all of today's host with the exception of perhaps Jimmy Fallon who is somewhere in between the Carson and Letterman. After that I would have to place Jon Stewart.

To add any of the current talent to a list, they have to be around a lot longer before they would be eligible for inclusion on my Best Late Night Host List.

PS-You forgot Arsenio Hall.

You're right about Carson. None compare to him and I don't believe anyone ever will.

For those who are able to view TV over the air, The Tonight Show is now airing on Antenna TV. Comes on twice a night. Once at 8 pm and then again at 11 pm.

Currently, John Oliver.

Back when I started watching late shows (1995 or so), unquestionably David Letterman.

I voted for both.

I loved Carson, too. He knew how to make his guests shine.

And I agree about Merv Griffin.

Johnny and Dave... Because, let's be honest.. Dave was Johnny v2.0.

He took the groundwork laid by Johnny, and built upon it.

Conan, I like.. I think he was the logical successor to Letterman.. Colbert is an abomination. Conan would be like Johnny 3.0.. NBC didn't give him time to gel at 11:30.. And.. Honestly, TBS, while giving him freedom.. That show feels like a podcast..

Jimmy Kimmel is probably the best "traditional' late night host now on a major network.

I will clarify.. I loved Colbert as Colbert.. But Colbert on his own? Nope. Not totally unfunny, but, not good, either.

And.. Hey.. Why no Magic Johnson on this poll? "The Magic Hour"? The one show that gives Chevy Chase a run for his money for the worst train wreck on late night TV.
