It's the economy stupid!!

One year later with a blank checkbook and a super majority in congress we are a negative 8 million jobs, record foreclosures, etc under Obama and the Dems watch.

And of course the scamming of the people by the dems in congress trying to ram a HC bill the majority of us do not want.

Explain. I am a little off today.

Do you mean like there was 40 percent of the population that was undecided?

Obama carried the state by a huge margin last year.

Take what he won by last year and what McDonnell just won by and the swing is around 40%. In other words the change was huge in the way people voted.

Shows the large turnaround in only one year, which is not common.

The most non-surprising result of the night. Especially since Virginia tends to elect its Governor opposite the Party in the White House

George W Bush (R) in the White House
Mark Warner (D), Tim Kaine (D) elected as Virginia Governors

Bill Clinton (D) in the White House
George Allen (R), Jim Gilmore (R) elected as Virginia Governors

George H.W. Bush (R) in the White House
Lawrence Douglas Wilder (D) elected as Virginia's Governor

I can't wait to see the NY-23 results

Nope, do not live in Va. Beautiful state for sure.

Love the Blue Ridge Parkway and the beaches of Va.

I lived there 30+ years. The state is strongly GOP, especially down-state. It takes a notable GOP failure to get a DEM governor, as seen where DEM Mark Warner handily won the Governor's job several years back, fixed a GOP financial mess and was so well respected that he also won a U.S. Senate seat last year when my old favorite GOP Senator John Warner (no relation) retired. I'm sure the DEMs are disappointed with the loss, but Deeds ran a poor campaign. I expect the usual GOP crap from the new guy, who has a past reflecting the usual evango-fascist, woman-hating outlook.

Riiiiggghhhht. Two (D) senators, 2 (D), governors before this. NoVa is obama country.

This is huge, when most of the pundits claimed VA a deep purple state.

VA is a state in transition. Twenty years ago, it was reliably red. Twenty years from now, it will be reliably blue. Those are just the economics and demographics of the state. Its liberal areas and populations are the ones realizing the majority of the growth. Right now, the state is in the middle. It can be tipped either way. A pragmatic Democrat such as Mark Warner will win. A knee-jerk Republican like George Allen will lose. This race was decided in the Spring. Former DNC Chair Terry McAuliffe should have had an easy time winning the Democratic primary, but he did nothing to convince voters that he understood or much cared about Virginia issues. He seemed to be assuming the win and merely planning to use four years in VA as a stepping stone to something else. The logical alternative to McAuliffe was Brian Moran, but he lacked state-wide name recognition and ended up third. That gave the race to Creigh Deeds, a well-known downstate rural populist Democrat. His rather provincial positions on gun rights, gay rights, immigration, and the death penalty made it difficult for mainstream Democrats to work up much enthusiasm for him. There hasn't been much of anyone who hasn't thought this race would go to the Republicans since June.

In 2008, Obama got 53% of the VA vote, McCain 47%.

Right now, with 3/4 of VA precincts in, McDonnell has 61% of the vote.

From 47% to 61% makes for a swing of 14%, or am I calculating wrong?

Some people just don't get it. This is a direct rebuke with what is going on in DC. 2010 looks bleak for the ruling party. You can thank Pelosi, Reid, Frank and the gang. My only hope is that the pendulum does not swing too far to the right.
