As an atheist, I would rather have an atheist humanist be president. But Powell's comment was refreshing. He underscored the principle that Christians have no divine right (or entitlement) to the highest office of this land. This is a secular country.

I agree. It's sad a few bad seeds destroyed the reputation of one religion here in the US..

He also mentioned that he is not endorsing Barack because of race. If that were true, he would have done that months ago. He said America has gone beyond that... smart man!

About two months ago Colin Powell said, "I told McCain, just because you are my friend does not mean I will vote for you. I told Obama, just because you are black does not mean I will vote for you."

Isn't powell a registered independent?
I respect him so much more for not being ruled by party loyalties. I also feel the same way about leiberman (though I don't pretend to agree with him all the time).

In the next few hours, the Left will use Powell's endorsement in their campaign, just as the Right would if he had endorsed McCain. Remember this:

Powell has indicated that he is not endorsing him because of his race. I believe it, as I have respect for Powell. By the same token, there are plenty of people here who not Obama supporters. That does not make us racist. There are plenty of reasons not to like him - his race is not one of them. I dislike Obama. I am not a racist.

Everytime you throw the race card on the table, it hurts Obama and blacks more than it helps them.

I'm curious - many people here wrote (I'm paraphrasing) "I'm not prejudiced. I'd vote for a Black man. In fact I wish Colin Powell were running, since he's someone I respect and admire."

So, tell me now. Do the same people who respect Colin Powell still have that admiration or are they now going to call him a terrorist?

I typed my post before reading this:

I agree. I don't like being called a racist either if I don't support affirmative action or other programs. I've had a hard time deciding since I'm a little more conservative than many of his supporters, but I'm going to vote for Obama.

We're about to elect a black man. Race is part of it. Mentioning race is not "playing the race card." Can we all get over that?

I don't suspect every McCain supporter of being a racist. I do suspect anybody here who goes on and on about "palling around with terrorists" and "he's a Muslim" and "Michelle hates America" of being a racist. If you're going to use assinine reasoning, you must be hiding your real reasons.

ITA. I am black, a woman and a registered Independent. My candidate of choice was Ron Paul. I admire Obama, his accomplishments and intelligence. I also think that he will make an excellent POTUS and will mend America's image globabally. Like you there are a few of his stances that I disagree with. Despite knowing he has no chance of winning I am still leaning towards writing in Ron Paul.

Great post!
