You can find more recent figures at different sites like dataplace, etc.. The poverty rates and concentrations don't change that much over even a decade (1 - 2 point swings). When the 2010 census figures come out, the colors on the map will still be the same.

Why don't you check out the cost of living in those "high-earning" states. Let me clue you in -- you'd need a LOT more than $63,000 in income to touch even a shabby condo in NH, MA or CT. See how far your money goes (actually, doesn't go) in these states and then continue to laugh at other states, where housing, groceries, and gasoline are affordable.

Yea well Florida has some of the best magnet schools in the U.S. -- DASH (Design and Art Senior High School) in Miami is ranked magnet school #1 in the nation.

Maybe if liberal federal legislation hadn't been inacted by the 'liberal' and 'enlightened' North, our Southern states (Florida, Arizona, Texas - the same 3) wouldn't be overwhelmed with immigrants (legal and illegal). They have a dumbing effect on any school system. You see, when they cross the border, they hit out shores and deserts and usually stay here instead of migrating North. Thus, the poor test scores.

Sorry, but, no, they won't. I used to live in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas and the unemployment rate is almost HALF what it was in the late-90s. Just one example; I'm sure there are more.

Those maps aren't unemployment figures. Those are poverty figures. Unemployment rates really don't mean much by themselves. You can have 100% employment in all low pay service sector jobs.

So big mean bear, are you saying that if someone were to go back 10, 20, 30 years, they'd see that the education systems in Arizona and Florida were better back then? Since it's the influx of immigrants that is dragging everyone down?

Perhaps poverty rates would be a better measure. The US poverty rate is 12.5%, these are the states that had a poverty rate above 12.5% (2005-2007 average), all except for California and New York are red. I am basing this on who voted for W in 2004, and since these figures are an average of 05-07.

New England
None above 12.5 Mid-Atlantic New York 14.4 Midwest None above 12.5 South Alabama 15.2 Arkansas 15.1 Georgia 13.5 Kentucky 15.7 Louisiana 17.1 Mississippi 21.1 North Carolina 14.1 Oklahoma 14.7 South Carolina 13.4 Tennessee 14.8 Texas 16.4 West Virginia 15.2 West Arizona 14.7 California 12.7 Montana 13.4 New Mexico 16.3

New England none??? That's impossible! That's where all the Communists are!!!

I heard also that Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate of all 50 States??? That's impossible too! Cause the South has the most right wing Evangelicals and we love the Lord, heterosexual marraige, and the death penalty. ......Them's family values issues!

What does it matter they are all relative to cost of living.

Reports like this are what motivate people to make a new home:
