Hillary received 18m votes during the primaries. But these are votes that will mostly go to Obama anyway (or so he hopes). But, according to surveys, around half of the American population NEVER want to see Hillary in the white house. If Obama had picked her, he would have picked somebody that the right would have limitless ammunition on of bad-mouthing each other through the primaries. How could that be an effective team?
Obama made the right choice in not opting for the 'obvious' candidate, and still picked somebody to counter the rights claim of inexperience. Also, I think he has picked the team that he considers best for the country rather than just making a political move as Mccain has.
He made a grave error in not picking Hillary. The primaries made a lot of people, especially woman voters, really mad. The sexism and misogyny of the press and obama's campaign alienated a good portion of those 18 million. The polls show that a good 20-30% of those voters are still not getting behind obama. That will be devastating if that hold true in the election.
I don't think he made a mistake - I don't think she could have taken a back seat to him and why should he deal with that for four years? As many HC supporters as he loses, he'll probably gain with those who think Palin is too evangelical for their taste.
