Lost in the shuffle: Michelle Obama's comment about earrings & $600 rebate checks - On Politics - USATODAY.com

Quote:
"You're getting $600," she told an audience of mostly African-American women here (about this year's federal tax rebates, designed to stimulate the economy). "What can you do with that? Not to be ungrateful or anything. But maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn't pay down every bill every month."

"Barack's approach is that the short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good," she continued. "And it may even feel good that first month when you get that check. And then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings," she joked.
How nice, you arrogant, elitist snob. Not too many people I know go out and buy $600 earrings. $600 goes along way, especially to the people she was talking to.

I am sure that is not what she meant. read it again and this time open your eyes to it. She didn't say to go out and buy a $600 pair of earrings. Boy you neocons read into something that is not even there.

No she is encouraging woman to have a bigger picture. We were not eligible for the rebate because we earned to much. That is a much better position then getting one. shackles thrown off by male domination in the work place woman can follow the lead of Hillary and Michelle and be prosperous and successful without inheritance but based on higher education and effort.

I am so sick of hearing how 600 dollars goes a long way. It does not. It does not go a long way for people making 12000 and it does not go a long way for people making 30000 and it does not go a long way for people making a million. A tax savings of 50 dollars for a year equates to a tank of gas, a light bill if you do not have air conditioning. Let's be real here. The low income rent in my town is 500-600 dollars for a two bedroom, what kind of boost is that going to give anyone, a months rent in the worst part of town once? We need long term solutions so our people can afford to live decent lives based on good jobs, with steady salaries. As far as 600 dollar earrings go, I worked at jewelry counter years ago and it was nothing for many women to stop by the counter and pick up a pair of 300 dollar earrings (way back in the 70s) and I made great commissions selling them.

If they are bright enough, study hard and apply themselves then if not them then their children.

Let the record be clear. I have very elitist snob tendencies. So to assume otherwise might be a mistake.
