Last time I checked.....this country was founded on religious freedom and it shouldn't matter whether Obama is Muslim or Christian.......or whether Mitt is a Mormon. Right?

You're right, his religion doesn't matter. The fact that he's lying about it would matter though, wouldn't you say?
Political campaigns are long and arduous affairs. Candidates often experience sleep deprivation, and frequently visit numerous cities and states within a short period of time. Regardless of which party they belong to, it's silly to keep bringing up these kinds of gaffes within speeches. These are instances of people who simply misspoke under often-grueling circumstances.
Of more concern to me are instances in which candidates, under far less-stressful conditions, show a general lack of basic knowledge about a pertinent issue (Palin, Bachmann, Quayle) or radically embellish specific events in their lives (H. Clinton). This goes beyond "misspeaking".
