A good turn | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

It's a class A flip-flop: last year he had promised to stay inside the system, so long as his Republican opponent did the same. John McCain agreed – but Obama is cutting loose anyway, so that he can now go on raising and spending as much as he likes.

Such a blatant U-turn should hurt any politician, but especially one whose entire platform is built on a promise of integrity, of sincerity, of "change we can believe in".

And yet, I suspect it won't. The McCain campaign is trying its best, with the candidate himself casting this as a matter of basic honesty: "[Obama] has completely reversed himself and gone back, not on his word to me, but the commitment he made to the American people".

Yes, when Obama flip flops it is cute, when Romney does it you find it despicable.

You have to understand the hyper partisans will forgive Obama anything. The Independents will hardly be as forgiving.

It really is ridiculous. In the 2008 election Obama promised multiple times to the American people to stay within the system and he often coupled it with speech about how he is a new president that will bring in honesty and change. Then he breaks that promise and they defend his flip flop and still claim he is honest and will bring change.

Are Obama's eyes really that dreamy for people like Florida.Bob that they lose consciousness and can't wake up?

What was his reasoning for flip-flopping?

He realized that by breaking his promise to the American people of bringing change in this area he couldn't annihilate McCain in fund raising.
