In other words its $21.44 per $1000 in value.

My House is now assessed at $85,000 ( 85*21.44 = 1822.40 in tax each year. )

LAS CRUCES are nearest neighbor property tax rate is only $7.93 per 1000 of assessed value. What a big difference!

The taxes here are ridiculous and the combined property tax just keeps going up, sometimes they raise the school portion, then the hospital portion, and when they max out, they just reassess the values of the houses to where they want them so they can collect the most taxes they can, even if you'd never get anything close to what they say the home is worth. They drive off profitable business with their taxes but it's helping Santa Teresa, Chaparral, and other parts of NM.

nrkelly,

My taxes are abot $5,000. After senior & veteran's reductions I pay around $4,000. I live in a middle class town where the average house is valued at $435,000 (they would sell for around $150,000 in El Paso) so you can imagine what the taxes are in the high price towns.

Not only are my property taxes in Dona Ana County about one third of what mine were in El Paso, I paid about 19.00 in State Income Tax after all the adjustiing, etc. I should have made this move before but I am glad I made it now.

Somebody on one of these forums presented the idea that if I (or anybody complaining like me) complained about Texas property taxes on a house it was probably because I was living over my head. In other words, if I had a house worth X dollars I should easily be able to pay the taxes. It isn't that I cannot pay the taxes. It isn't that I resent contributing to the greater good. It is the fact that I resent paying into a corrupt, broken government system wherein little returns to our communities and that is what is happening in Texas and no less in El Paso.

I sold my last house in El Paso at 90,000.00 in Central. I just received the tax appraisal on it by oversight. The CAD appraised that house at 94,000.00; $4000 over what a real person paid me for it. The bill was going to be about 2700.00 if I recall before I burned it.
Yes, I could afford to pay that bill but I ask you how many people living in a 90,000.00 home in Central can? It is robbery.
