I read (about 10 years ago) that gyms have more people joining during unemployment, since those people have more free time. On the other hand, you do have to pay to join. I belonged to a gym starting when I got laid off and I recently quit after 10 years because I didn't want to pay the $34 any more. That says a lot about my empty, pathetic life.
I wonder if places like the 99-cent store actually do better when things are tight. There's probably a joke like: people who used to shop at Macy's now shop at Target - people who used to shop at Target now shop at the 99-cent store. But I can't think of an entire joke.
Another factoid: when people cut costs, they stop going to the dentist.
Casinos, bars and liquor stores always see an uptick in economic recessions.
1) Any Street Food Business should do well. People tend to avoid eating out in Restaurants that frequently in this economic climate but Street Food nobody minds if it is good and cheap. Again its a big city thing where people walk on streets or take mass transit.
2) Auto Repair shops are doing fine as we have now oldest fleet of cars in American history.
3) Cheap bus or shuttle companies like Megabus. People are saving money now and instead of taking a short flight or renting a car, those who are short of money take Megabus.
But I don't really consider Think Progress as being "extreme left;" it is merely left. I would consider the Daily Worker or cartoonist/columnist Ted Rall as examples of "extreme left." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6PdecBn2no

Heck, the way the airlines are raising fares, even when times improve, Megabus will do well.
I agree with this. Ridiculous how many people don't have a dollar in their pocket but have Tattoos..Priorities all messed up.
I've been so surprised through this recession to walk by or drive by tattoo parlors and usually see customers in them. It seems like they could be a good business.
I don't have tattoos , but in L.A it seems more people HAVE tattoos now than don't...It's so funny how they all think they are rebellious ..
There's no reason to assume the tattoo is recent. I have a friend who has 15 year old tattoo work that looks almost new. Quality work. It's not like you can pawn your tattoo when times get tough, vs a person being able to downsize their house or luxury car or whatever to liquidate some of their assets.
There are a lot of crappy tattoo parlors out there though, and I am amazed that people will pay for crap work, but apparently they will and are satisfied with badly done flash and will pay good money for it.
As for the original topic, I think that the thrift stores are more crowded these days. I've always been a thrift store shopper so it is nothing new for me. Wish I could open my own store!

Agreed. It reminds me of people complaining that teachers are over paid because they saw a teacher driving a Cadillac to work, but completely unaware the teacher's spouse was an attorney! People see what they wish to see!
Let's not overlook those crazy pessimists, like myself, who think that the economy will never-ever recover again and take what savings they do have, or if there's still room on the credit card, to take one "last" trip around the world! In other words, what the hell, just go for broke!!!
I'm one that thinks the economy is going to get worse, so I've packed in 8 trips the past 6 months, so if I'm down to eating Ramen noodles everyday, I've got my trip memories to lessen the pain!
In Denmark, used clothes shops on-line and bricks and mortar.
