Your pet has CHF and is on lasix or similar type water pill because your dogs heart is not able to pump enough blood to the rest of the organs. This causes build up of excess fluids in the tissues thus the medication to eliminate excess water.

Now CHF is a very serious condition and the medication should only be stopped on the advice of the vet.

Congestive Heart Failure...depends on what stage/severity your dog is suffering from CHF. In early stages, controlling diet, BP/rate/rhythm, and fluid intake can prevent progression. The next step is control volume overload with meds and probably increasing cardiac input. In the later stages, discontinuation of meds is an end-of-life decision and can be painful...the equilavent of slowly drowning. If your best-friend is suffering, I'm truely sorry. If any of my pets (2 dogs/2 cats) were in this situation, I would consider stopping the pain.

By "stopping the pain" most people would mean putting your dog to sleep.

Thanks. I was trying to sugar-coat something that's unpleasant to think about.
