My 5 month old puppy has lost a tooth...Is this normal? I am assuming it is...I have small kids who love to play tug of war games with him (yes i stop it as soon as i see it) but I am wondering was it a rough game that jolted a tooth out or is it just nature taking it's course?? Will he lose all of his teeth?
Pups generally start to lose their baby teeth at around 4 to 5 months old. Usually they all fall out naturally, although sometimes a game of tug-of-war helps . It might be best to have the kids be gentle for a while. It's hard to tell how much discomfort the loose teeth cause, but your kids will probably be able to relate if they're old enough to have experienced the same thing. Keep in mind that teething dogs do chew on things, so have some Kongs or chew toys handy to help save your chair legs....
Do they eat less when they are 'teething' like this? I just noticed today he did not eat as much as he normally does... He has been toting his Kong toys all day...No wonder!
Give him things to chew on right now, yes teeth hurt when teething just like human babies.
Also tug in itself is a fine game as long as the owner is in control of who wins and does not let the dog get possessive and growly with the toy, but it can damage young adult teeth coming in and you want to ease up until they are finished growing.
Check the most recent 'Whole Dog Journal' about playing tug - they review the whole thing and go through some important points, such as what movements are dangerous to your dog!
Well it is a 2 year old that does most of the tugging...my 4 year old plays occasionally... But I always try to stop it...I read in a Dog Behavior book that tug of war was not a good game for dogs to play...
Thanks for the comments...makes me feel better.

I have a five month old right now as well. He's lost all of his baby teeth with the exception of his upper canines and a few cuspids. He's miserable right now, I've had to suspend training and have taken to temporarily grinding his food up. If you're feeding dry and are concerned that he may be losing weight, it may be a good idea to temporarily switch over to canned puppy chow. If he's at least holding his weight and seems otherwise healthy, I wouldn't worry about it.
