Depending how BIG or small your dog is, you may or may not have to shovel a path. I am waiting for a nice inch or 2 of snow to cover the current dog spots on the yard. Looks like lemon, but definitely is not lemon.

My dog LOVES to "help" shovel and snow blow.

Pik, let us know how it goes! And STAY WARM, it looks like a monster storm down where you are!! I hope you don't lose power (that is the only thing I worry about with storms -- this storm appears to be on track to miss us entirely).

Someone mentioned fluffy snow, and I think that's an important distinction when you're talking about a foot or more. Even a big dog might have trouble wading through and pooping in that, or might not want to even if he likes snow generally. I would definitely shovel, just a one shovel's width path a few feet long. Since he's young, there's a better chance he won't care than with a slightly older dog. He may wander off and poop in the snow if he can, but I wouldn't assume he can or will.

It depends upon the size of the dog. My German Shepherds and Deerhounds just went out in the snow The 6 pound Papillon has to have a path shoveled and an area cleared in her potty area.

Unless the snow is icy, and then the Papillon just walks right on top of it.

So far its pretty fluffy snow. He had a good time running around in it but it will be difficult once it gets deeper and they are calling for between 2-4 feet now.

I mean that sounds obvious, but is there anything you do to prepare for these storms in terms off taking your pet out to go to the bathroom?

We got an inch yesterday and my boy Obie loves running in the snow, btw!
Yes, shovel a path. May walk him out along path, to larger area you also shovel at end of path. Maybe have paper towels to dry face/coat.

Thinking about and praying for all of you. Check online FEMA, will have tips. http://www.fema.gov/
Have flaslights, water, food clothing and blankets ready. Be safe

I really hope that is one of those weatherman cya things when there is just a very tiny chance that would happen, but they don't want people to be unprepared if it does!!! Stay warm and safe!

Well my husband shoveled an area for him but it is not 'his' area so he wouldn't go. I suppose if he has to go bad enough he will.

I keep a micro fiber towel to dry him off with.

Not always, have a 160+lb English Mastiff, so a decent sized dog.....unless there is a path cleared to a cleared spot he will not do number 2......it is actually pretty sad....
