so I cooked beefback ribs tonight with some veggies and potatoes, and so after eating most of the meat off my ginormous ribs, I decided to give a bone with the leftover meat and such on it to Sadie. Well needless to say 5 minutes later and it was bone dry and she had the biggest smile. I have proof! see below. also if I take one and freeze it so I can save it for tomorrow or later this week will it still be ok for her to eat/chew without getting sick? she loves it. shes chewing on the empty bone right now like non-stop its so cute.
She looks soooo happy! My dog would go crazy over that too, but I'm not much of a meat-eater, so he's usually S.O.L. I'm also hesitant to give him bones anymore, since he attacked his best friend (a Husky dog) over a bone once... they always ate peacefully out of the same dish, so I figured anything that powerful wasn't good for his mental state.
Just don't give them the bone after it's been cooked.
FWIW- MY friend was holding a rib bone (about half the size of the one in the picture) letting his dog eat the leftover meat... The dog got a hold of the bone and swallowed it whole. He made a call to the Vet who said to watch him carefully. That night, he said the dog's stomach made a bunch of gurgling sounds but there was no residual issues.

what do you mean after its been cooked? how else would I give it? I cooked the ribs, ate them, and then gave her the bone. lol I dont think I could give her a bone with raw meat on it, and I dont think getting all of that raw meat off the bones first to cook the meat would be practical...I'm confused
Cooked beef, pork, or lamb bones are fine, in fact, the bones should be cooked before you give it to your dog for the same reason humans cook their meat before eating it. It 1) makes it easier to chew, and 2) kills the surface bacteria. Even with no meat left on the bones at all, your Sadie will still love it, even frozen. Just don't give her more than one or two bones per day or she could get colitis or gastro-intestinal stoppage.
I don't know where you guys get your info about cooked bones, but they are not be given to dogs cooked, period. They splinter when are cooked. Raw bones are the ones that should be given to dogs, not cooked. You need to educate yourselves a little more.
It's been my experience that you should not give them a rib bone that's been cooked as it can splinter. Smoking it is a different story, unless of course you'rs is like mine and cracks them anyway. hence, mne do not get bones, rawhides etc. etc. I use carrots instead and in summer they both love ice.
