We have a 6 month old little bully who will be moving with us to northern NJ this spring. Is there any issues specific to the East Coast (weather, snow, terrain) that we should get a heads-up with prior to our move? He is an indoor dog but loves to go for walks and to outdoor shopping areas, anywhere he can see people and get rubs!
in spring, probably not. You might want to limit outdoor walks for a bit as the ground may still be cold (even frozen) altho' the air is warm. Frostbite on his little non-acclimated paws is still possible.
I've never seen them used. but the dogs I've seen most are the ones who run around outside year round anyway. I think you might try them to begin with but by next winter, you probably shouldn't need them. Depends o how long you're outside.
The East Coast has a much worse problem with Lyme Disease. Keep that tick prevention on maximum effort all the time.
You are probably already treating with heart worm prevention, so keep that up. You will probably see more fleas that you had in California.
The big difference between California and Maryland that was really obvious was that people in MD were afraid of my German Shepherd Dogs. Gas station attendants wouldn't put gas in my car unless I rolled the windows up, while in California, the gas station attendants handed the dogs biscuits and rubbed their ears.
most urban areas that get snow and ice will spray salt and
brine on city streets, this is what I would be
more concerned with than cold paws.
make sure to rinse/wash your dogs paws coming
in from walks/mall/sidewalks.
second on the need for heartworm prevenative, same for fleas.
Thanks alot for the heads-up info...my pup and I appreciate it! Question---are dogs as welcome and seemingly "everywhere" on the east coast/NJ as they are in So Cal?
