I have had a couple of cloth covered couches but they tend to get scratched up with our dog's paws. So I was wanting to get a leather couch but I was worried it would be a total waste. Our dog doesn't scratch at the couch but when he gets up onto the couch, the fabric gets worn.

What do you do? What kind of couch do you have?

Ripped up leather but my cats have done the ripping. My dogs don't harm it in any way.

Leather...but get a good thick leather...not a thin one. Look for aniline dyed rather than just surface dyed. I have five dogs...four are allowed on the furniture. It's 5 years old, cream colored, and it still looks as good as it did on day one. Some times I keep a folded king sized flat sheet on it, other times a fleece blanket but most times, it doesn't have anything on it.

I have a microfiber couch that has held up extremely well, but I do keep a quilt over it most of the time. It is Flexsteel, most uncomfortable couch in the world. I'm glad the dogs like it. We also had a two microfiber recliners. One is still in perfect condition, the other disintegrated before our very eyes. It was a Lazyboy and the fabric was just cheap. If you go cloth, the microfiber can be wiped down with a cloth and look good as new - but I'd seriously want to get something heavy and durable. Once the recliner fell apart we could see just how cheesy the fabric was. If you go leather, look for distressed, high quality stuff. If it's distressed you really can't tell if it gets more distressed :-) Nothing like good cowhide - works for the cow for its lifetime :-)

We have a nice quality leather sectional (Lazy-Boy brand) that has held up through the 4 years we've had our dog.

NO scratches, no rips, nothing that would indicate that our dog is allowed on the couch.

You can get quilted TEMPORARY covers for your chairs and couches. We bought a new couch in September. Since I sit on it every day, and since the dog sits on it when we are not there, even though he gets down as the car drives in, we got some of those for our new chairs and couches. They work great, and are easy to replace or to take off when company comes. No dirt or stains on the new couch in three months.

We have a very durable made in the USA leather sofa with thick grained hide leather. 7 years and no issues yet. Just periodic leather cleaning and conditioning and it stays looking great.

Great-looking couch, and some very happy dogs! I think that kind of leather gets more beautiful with age, honestly.

I think the best answer is to get furniture you like, and then some nice throws for the dogs.
