When I see anything on TV about sniffer dogs or rescue dogs or therapy dogs, I tap Artie snoozing next to me and say, "See, those boys work for a living," and he gives me that look, "Yeah, well, we're all retired now."

They all do, and they know it! Dodger hasn't quite retired from his self-assigned job as my sidekick and protector of the car and aggressor to anyone on the other side of a door or gate, but he's only eleven (the youngster of my gang).
Smaller dogs get a bad rap when in reality they can learn anything larger dogs can. My older Bichon/Shih Tzu Mix (Cooper) is very smart. You should see him with children, especially toddlers. We had Thanksgiving at our house last year when my nephew was about 2 years old. We had the basement door open as people were going down to eat and watch TV ect. Cooper watched the 2 year old all day and would physically keep him away from the basement steps. He sensed that he was too young for steps. Nobody ever taught him that. People were amazed.
When we go out to the family farm my parent's Border Collie just loves Cooper. He is every bit as smart as the Border Collie. Very fun to watch them together. Cooper would fit right in on a farm.
Many detector canines are just dogs without any specific physical traits except a good nose. Too many people assume that detector dogs are traditional "large" working dogs, but going way back to 1986 when i encountered my frist detector dog on a aircraft search, it looked like some cross between a toy poodle and a whippet, ugly little thing but could detect insects and grubs in anything at hyper speed. If you see behind the scenes at airports or port terminals, many small, toy and miniture breeds are well represented in some form, but seldom garne the spotlight. Good to see that changing.

They've started using smaller, more cuddly dogs in the airports here.
Because they're less frightening to a lot of people.
Or so they say.
