I just got a 5-year old Yellow Lab. He drinks over a gallon of water every day. We were wondering if he should be checked for diabetes or something like that. He's always thirsty, but our other 2 dogs, one is also a Lab, is normal. The reason I know how much they drink is I travel with them individually. I carry a gallon jug for their water. The new Lab empties it every day. My other Lab will take several days to empty it. Or, do some dogs just like water a lot?

If you just got this lab I'd suggest taking him to your vet for a good exam anyway. Mention this concern to your vet and see what they suggest.

Have you watched the dog urinate to notice if the urine is clear, concentrated, or if there may be blood in it?

Take the dog in right away
could be failing kidneys and the quicker you act on this the better

Please take it in asap

Wow! I sure will, and will let you know what they say. The urine is normal looking, as is the other things this dog does. I'll ask the previous owner who had to adopt her out if she noticed this or is it a new thing. Thanks so much.

My dog is a bottomless pit for water, and the vet's never found anything wrong with him. Now I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion.

I've heard 1 ounce per bound of body weight per day. My dog weighs 70 pounds, so that's slightly more than 2 litres per day...and that seems to be dead-on for his consumption.

any human with diabetes can tell you constant thirst is one of the first signs of diabetes. I think it works the same way for dogs.

Constant thirst was the first sign of our first mini schnauzer's diabetes. It was also the first sign of our current mini schnauzers Cushing's disease.

I had 2 labs from the same litter...had them since they were 8 weeks old until Jack passed away last year. Bailey has been a water hog since he was a pup. Jack not so much. Bailey has had all of his blood tests and they were clean.

It's worth getting him in to get checked but don't be too alarmed.
