Ever heard of Appalachia? This is the poorest part of the US. Poverty here is beyond what Detroit has ever seen.

Yet you will not I repeat will not find the crime in Appalachia as you do in Detroit.

I just love when people try to ague poverty = crime. Then I thow this little scenerio at them and leave them with their mouth dropped open.

We all know why Detroit is the waste of space it is.
maybe the crime rate is so low in Appalachia 'cause most of the crimes committed are against animals, if you get my drift?

I can say that when you go to Lions/ Tigers game, you will not be harassed by a caucasian bum to hand over your loose change or as a last resort, to "bum" them a cigarette.

I am 20 yrs old and have a cousin that runs with the Joy road crew. Inner city Detroit is almost impossible to travel through at night if you're not black. If you are white, good luck avoiding assault and your wallet being stolen.

But then about 45 mins west down I-96 you'll enter the city of Howell where I've heard had KKK Headquarters. Neighboring city Brighton where most of my family lives has only a handful of african americans if that. This pretty much defeats the whole argument about race. The whites hold down the burbs while the blacks hold down inner city. It is pretty uncommon for blacks to venture out to areas such as Brighton and South Lyon, whereas its the same for whites traveling to the inner city slums.

One thing that I have observed from all of the posts is that they are alot of finger pointing. Instead of running from the problems let's address them and reach a solution. Is this not the United States of America, land of the free, home of the brave, United we stand and devided we fall. We all need each other to survive and as soon as we realize that the better.

You are your brother's keeper

I'm a 37 year old white woman. I went to Wayne State and moved into an apartment near campus and loved it. Later I moved into a beautiful apartment on the riverfront east of downtown. For 25 years of my life I lived and spent the majority of my time in the city of Detroit and I have never been the victim of a crime or even threatened in any way. I ended up getting sick of the weather and moving to CA for 12 years, but recently moved back to be closer to my family. I still spend most of my time in Detroit and enjoy the theatres, symphony, sporting events, restaurants and clubs. I wish I could shake the suburbanites who run to their cars holding their purses after a hockey game and tell them how ridiculous their fears are. I'm not going to argue that Detroit has a lot of crime and many other problems, of course it does, but if people from the suburbs would get over their fear of non whites and come enjoy this city we could start to make things better. I do see this happening more since I have been back and I hope that trend continues.

How many crimes against persons were reported after events downtown last year by complainants from the suburbs?

Plenty of suburbanites are not afraid of non-whites. They're afraid of criminals who generally turn out to be non-white in that part of the world.

I don't know, but in my large circle of white friends and family who all spend most of their entertainment time at places and events downtown the number is ZERO! Not one single mugging or even a threat. I can't say the same for other cities I have spent time in. No city is completely safe, but downtown Detroit is quite safe if you use simple common sense.

I just wonder how many people on this forum have actually gotten mugged or threatened? Since I've never seen a crime happen in Detroit, been threatened or even scared, I don't know...I feel pretty safe...lol

I think many of the people who post about how terrifying downtown Detroit is are those who sit in their suburban bubbles watching the TV news while the rest of us are out enjoying life. I know some people are just really afraid of cities in general and worry about crime. That's fine, I do understand that, but I wish they would stop scaring other people who might enjoy visiting or living here.

I tried to tour my old neighborhood in 1981. Plymouth/Schaefer.
Within minutes, a crowd started to gather on the corner.
Downtown is supposed to be safe, but don't go into the neighborhoods unless you have a death wish.

If you want to know what Detroit is like, first look at the layout. Imagine a big wagon wheel or doughnut. Now, cut it in half, because half would be the Detroit River. Where the center of that wheel is: Is downtown, and all the spokes are main roads leading out from the center all the way (in some cases) to the far suburbs. The downtown has a small area that could be considered nice. A TINY part is VERY nice as are a few neighborhoods. 1%. Imagine taking 1 square mile of downtown Chicago and ripping out 2/3 of the buildings. It's okay and Greektown is safe (other than dozens of panhandlers) but then you have ALLLLLL that area between that little center spot and the outer edge. These are the Detroit neighborhoods. About 5% of them are nice, even very nice. About another 10% is so-so. But the VAST majority is ghetto. If you really want to SEE it, go check out a video called A Tour of Detroit on YOUTUBE. (I can mention that, right?) That is REAL. You can drive out of Greektown and get on, say Gratiot Avenue and travel for miles and miles and miles and 99% of it...well, you would NEVER turn down a side-street and park your car and get out and walk. (Didn't anybody see the Movie 8 Mile? that's pretty much it)

Other than the sports teams and added police presence during games, most people don't go into the city.

There is more racial tension here than anywhere outside of the Middle East. And that is only getting worse now that King Kwame (Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick) is playing the race card again. The family of a stripper killed in a drive-by shooting is suing Kwame and the city for $150 million. Two cops that Kwame fired won almost $9 million last summer. This is the most corrupt city in the country, bar none. You can also search stories about the Manoogian Mansion Party Investigation going on. Kwame ALLEGEDLY was getting a lap dance, his wife came in and beat up the girl. The girl ended up killed a few months later (the same DAY her name was put in a police memo. The same day!) yet, half the city LOVES Kwame because he likes to play the race card. As time goes by, you all will hear more about this case, the SEX TEXTs are nothing compared to what's going to be coming out soon.

To sum it up: Most major cities have good and bad ares. the difference between them and Detroit is that 85% or more of Detroit is dangerous ghetto. Don't let anybody fool you. It looks like Beirut, the city government is hostile toward anything white people have to say, and Forbes just rated it "THE MOST MISERABLE CITY" The only people who think Detroit is cool are people who have found a little niche and live in it comfortably. I work downtown everyday, so I see what goes on. Oh, plus Detroit is one of the LEAST sunny cities. Nice and cold and grey. There ARE MORE ABANDONED BUSINESSES IN DETROIT THAN OCCUPIED ONES. The same may be true for houses, not sure.

If you are from another large city, just think about that fact: MORE ABANDONED, BOARDED-UP BUSINESSES THAN OCCUPIED ONES! Most people can't even imagine that.

Oh, I almost forgot, Detroit taxes are the HIGHEST in the state. Car insurance is about 4 times as much as the suburbs and that's if you have a PERFECT DRIVING RECORD. The city just SUCKS you dry and you get nothing in return. Detroit sold off many of it's public parks last year because there was no money for upkeep.

Well, to be honest, they don't charge for the rats and roaches. My aunt and uncle are getting ready to move out from what has, until recently, been one of the nicest areas. Nobody takes care of anything anymore. The house next door is abandoned and there are broken windows and 'possums crawling in and out.

I think it may also be the illegal dogfighting capitol of the world, not sure.

You can drive for 15, 20 blocks on Christmas and not see more than maybe one strand of Christmas lights.

People are going to say I am lying or exaggerating. I am not.

There is another video somewhere about the DETROIT MAYOR'S MOM and if you watch it, you cannot believe that this woman is a U.S Congresswoman!! She is president of the American Black Caucus and I swear, she acts like an animal with rabies.

The radio shows love to use her quotes as drops :

She says "He didn't just get up in here by just cummin!! Ya'all sent him up in here! Don't let nobody talk about ya'all's BOY LIKE THAT! Too many people died for us! We're here to FIGHT!!!" Then she goes on, throwing her arms around and yelling at the people watching tv. THIS WAS AT AN ELECTION RALLY!!!!!!! Her name is Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick.

My God, if you are thinking about moving here, you better investigate! If you are black and moving from Compton, you may find Detroit ok, but really bitter cold with almost no mass transit. Enjoy!! :-)

If you are not black and do not think that black people are the absolute most incredible race to have ever walked the earth, all I can say is...Learn to shoot and bring some earplugs so you can sleep through the neighbor's 3:00am weeknight rap party. If you plan on ever walking to a neighborhood store and you are a white woman, ...um...I don't know what to tell you, I have never seen that happen. I guess buy a couple of Rottweilers to escort you.

To the white people who live inside Detroit, let me say this to both of you, I am worried for you. If Obama gets elected and somebody does a Lee Harvey Oswald on him...you better freakin hide in your basement for a few days. I'm serious, they will KILL you and burn your house.

Half the Detroiters ARE nice people, but the other half are SO BAD, it doesn't equal out.

Peace.

P.S. Most of the suburbs are pretty nice.
