That's like, Alpha-city status.
Well that's how major cities grow into a diversified economy. In order to get to that status they need to lure more businesses in. The easiest would be the ones that are trying to move to another place or expand. As for Miami, don't they only have like 5 fortune 500 companies? From what alot of ex FL residents tell me, there isn't much left in FL outside of tourism. But of course in Florida that is huge in itself.

Yea, but they have of Latin America companies that operate there as well. I figure if you're not proficient in Spanish, that limits the number of companies you could probably work for there.

Also, they may have only 5 Fortune 500 companies HQ there, but you only really need the regional HQs of larger companies to have a pretty decent impact.

When I was in Miami it was alot of foreign languages spoken, to the scale I've never seen before, not even in Cali. So I can see alot of people from the islands or decedents having more opportunities than most.

Also, yeah your right. Kind of like how Chrysler is still here even though it got bought out by Fiat, but it can no longer be considered a F500.

Saw in another thread that Detroit ranked #11 among major cities in job growth with +58,000 new jobs created between April 2014 and April 2015.

Like someone else pointed out, strong universities are probably the best way to lure businesses. Good universities have partnerships with major corporations for research, technology and other things. Plus, it's a better way than just offer tax breaks to businesses to come. Detroit has an advantage in that there are a good number of colleges and universities within an hour of there.

For IT work I know GE pays more than the auto companies. Is 17.08 going to become the mandatory minimum wage? I doubt it, also last I checked I believe we are not even keeping up with the rest of the country on income growth.

1.9 percent looks about average for most large metro areas.

forget HQs. Detroit has a preponderance of regional offices from major players... Google is here. Delta Airlines is here. The nation's largest AAA group is headquartered here. United Airlines has a call center here. All the major banks are here. Xerox. AT&T. Amex. Companies you've never heard of like Minacs, who handles customer service for all the automakers but also Apple and Netflix, are here. This is a corporate hub unlike almost any other in the Midwest.

Once Midtown and Downtown are connected, we will see more development. Detroit needs to tap more into the Windsor-Montreal Corridor. Hopefully with the new bridge, economic ties between Ontario, Quebec, and Michigan will get stronger.
