Since when did I say Pittsburgh was better than Detroit, or that I wouldn't live in Detroit? You are awfully defensive. I did not insult your city. I posed a very simple question. I grew up in Howell, and most of the people I knew, including my parents, spoke only disparagingly about Detroit and Flint. My question was intended to inspire discussion about the liveability and perceptions of Detroit.

Pittsburgh is (by far) the healthiest of all the rust belt cities besides Chicago (which is in a league of its own).

I've heard Milwaukee is nice, too, but I've never been there.

Milwaukee's doing OK too, but I think Pittsburgh's doing better all things considered (economically, socially and aesthetically).

Milwaukee however does have the benefit of bing a cheap commuter city near Chicago, given its close proximity.

Peoeple in the thread below seemed to have reached the same conclusion...

It's crazy to me that there's 23 "yes" votes.

What's stopping them from actually moving to Detroit?

The idea of paying outrageous taxes. Why would I move in and pay over $5000 a year just to be in the city? Why would I pay that to live anywhere?

Well the question says "would", which implies sometime in the future if the cards are stacked right.

I am still hoping that we can get our finances in order before prices go back up. I want to buy some houses in Detroit. I would consider a downtown Condo, but they are just not available. I am not likely to live downtwon, but my kids might. I just think it is stupid not to buy property downtown right now if you can afford to.

I guess I interpreted the question differently, because the OP's post said, "If you are not willing to live in the city, what would it take for you to consider it?" I thought it meant would you move into the city right now, which is an obvious no.

Five years ago, I might have said yes. Seven, eight years ago, I was looking at houses on the far east side and around 8/Hayes to Kelly. Most of the areas I was looking into went from iffy to genuinely bad. One house I was interested in near Morang and Harper (for $110K back then, no less) is now sitting abandoned, the garage covered in graffiti. I would have had to been smoking something to have paid $140K for a side-entry colonial almost within sight of St. John's Hospital, an area where similar stuff now goes for $35-50K.

Now? Maybe, but I wouldn't make my wife live there. The 48236 Zip Code still looks kindasorta doable, but when you can get a brick house in a decent section of Harper Woods or maybe even St. Clair Shores for a few bucks more, why bother with Detroit?
