Happy Labor Day everyone,
I need a recommendation for a good steakhouse in the area. I know about the one at 801 Grand, but that is a little out of my league. Are there any other recommendations? My personal preference is for a locally owned independent restaurant that if not exactly a "steakhouse" will have wonderful beef on the menu.
I am at a loss here because I am more of an ethnic food/seafood person; I can't remember the last time I had a steak at a restaurant- if ever. Any suggestions? Price really isn't a huge issue, just think the prices at 801 Grand are a bit steep.
Thank you all!

I recommend either the Big Steer in Altoona or Iowa Beef Steakhouse on E. Euclid in Des Moines. I prefer the latter because of the unlimited salad bar. They're both locally owned and not as pricey as 801 Grand. Bon appetit!

The system won't let me rep you right now, Maniac77, but I second the Iowa Beef Steakhouse.

OP, Don't be put off by the lack of landscaping. The beef is excellent!

OP, if you happen to be up in Ames, there's a Texas Roadhouse right on Duff, sort of across from the Target. I was there yesterday for lunch, and it was a lot better than the one I went to in Ohio. The beef is much better out here, overall.

I agree that Texas Roadhouse is wonderful even though it's a chain. There's one just outside of Des Moines in Johnston off I-80. Chicago Speakeasy on Euclid is another good local place to get a steak, but I wouldn't consider that restaurant to be a steakhouse. It does have an excellent unlimited salad bar that goes with most entrees.

Excellent! I'll keep that in mind. I'm still learning that area. I got to Grimes for the first time last week.

Chicago Speakeasy. Hands down.

801 Chop House was a big letdown, IMO. WAY overpriced for ambiance and food.

We went to Iowa Beef Steakhouse last night. Great steak. We all really enjoyed it.
I will keep Chicago Speakeasy in mind for next time.
My brother and his wife are from rural north-western Montana way up by the Canadian border, so Des Moines is a huge city by contrast. We did the whole Des Moines sight-seeing tour, did a little shopping, lunch at Biaggi's, went to Chocolate Storybook (my personal favorite chocolatier in the area), and then ended up at Iowa Beef.
All in all a fun day!
