For that price range don't move to the south side. South side is ok, but the schools aren't very good. In that range look at Indianola, Norwalk, Pleasant Hill, Altoona, and some neighborhoods in DSM proper. The western burbs are good as well.

I agree; nothing against the south side, but there are nicer areas within reasonable commuting distance where you can buy a house in your price range. Army Post Road is easily accessible from the eastern 'burbs via 65 and from the west via 5, or from communities outside the metro to the south by either of those routes.

Southwest Des Moines proper is very nice, but housing prices might be a bit higher than the range you gave. Southeast ((Easter Lake area) is nice too. Some of that area is in the Des Moines school district and other parts (more to the east) are Southeast Polk school district.

Why, specifically, are you moving to the south side?

OP says the job is on Army Post Road, I assume he/she is just looking for something convenient to work.

Gotcha. I missed that.

Really, there are plenty of places to live in the metro that would be a reasonable commute to Army Post, especially with that bipass. I would NOT choose to live on the south side.

The south side is considered better than east & north side (Southwestern hills neighborhood is one of the richest zip codes in DSM). The southwest part is very close to West Des Moines (where the malls and whatnot are) while still being close to Army Post Rd.

Not sure why it's so bad.

Nobody said it was bad. However, for $160,000 there are much better school districts to consider.

I think people need to be careful when they say "southside" in realizing this is a very big area of DM.

I doubt the families living in Southwestern Hills area are sending their kids off to bad schools. I know several attornys who's houses are in this area.

The challenge for the OP is finding a home in that price range that would fall into the better schools within the district.
