I really don't know what is best here. We are traveling to copper mountain from denver int airprt in January. 2 adults and 2 small kids. I planned on renting a car but now am a bit nervous because of the snow. If it's nice weather I think we would be ok in a rental, but what about a snowy day. would it just be safer to take a shuttle and not have to be worry about the weather. We have never driven in icey or snowy conditions. The rental is 1/2 the price of the shuttle. Need some advice here.

January can be either 50 degrees and sunny or 20 degrees and snow. You could reserve a car and keep an eye on the weather forecast so that you could change your mind at the last minute. Just know that the weather can change drastically in 24 hours. You may be able to drive up there and then get a storm and not want to drive back. Our highway department does a commendable job of plowing, but if you've never driven in ice or snow I would not recommend risking it.
