Unfortunately it has changed in the past few years since Google expanded in Boulder. What was a funky mountain town now has more of a "Boulder suburb" feel. Housing prices have skyrocketed.

We've considered Golden as our next destination but we may be priced out of that area by the time we're ready.

kkroro if you have any questions feel free to ask. I'm not on the forums much these days but you can DM me if you want more info.
The same changes have also happened Evergreen, although we were never very funky.
These days the traffic congestion up here feels like any other Denver suburb.

That's what happens when an area is overbuilt with respect to its roads.

I have lived and worked in Evergreen for 12 years and most of the responses that you have received here are fairly accurate.

Golden has areas that will make you feel like you live surrounded by greenery and other parts of Golden feel more suburban. Some suggestions for where to look in Golden if you want greenery and views would be up Golden Gate Canyon, Lookout Mountain, and Genesee.

Evergreen has a mixture of suburban-like subdivisions, as well as homes with a more mountain feel. Evergreen stretches from I-70 to very close to Hwy 285. North Evergreen tends to have a more suburban feel (with many homes on .25 to .50 acre lots) and South Evergreen gives you a bit more elbow room between your neighbors (with many homes on 2+ acre lots). Evergreen can also be part of two different counties. There's Clear Creek County and Jefferson County. There's Evergreen addresses in both.

I wouldn't hesitate to also look at Conifer, mountain area of Morrison, Pine and Bailey. Depending on where your son lives within Denver, all of those areas will likely be within an hour of him. Golden and Evergreen are the most expensive areas and your money will stretch a bit further as you head south on 285. All of those areas will give you views, mountain living and greenery.

Happy to answer any other questions you have. There are lots of empty nesters living in the foothills and plenty of ways to get involved in the mountain community!

Are you among the newly liberated now free to work from home instead of being tied to a certain city?

We are looking for a place to buy. We are retired and love to hike and generally be outdoors as much as possible. We would love to be near hiking trails and trees are nice too, especially Aspens! Budget wise we can spend up to a mil. Don't need schools.
