Much as I hate to see summer end, I love fall! Here is a foliage guide I found on the Colorado Springs forum:

We found an easy day trip with kids was to head up to Lake Dillon. There's a great playground right on the lake with beautiful views, and decent Aspen viewing.

Still some time left to go. I was hiking Holy Cross wilderness around the 8,000 - 10,000 ft elevation this past weekend and no leaves have started changing yet.

Generally speaking, "they" say the 3rd weekend in Sept for peak viewing, though it can be different from year to year.

It would be very rare for the aspen to be turning in August.
Here's a good website for info on how and why the leaves change color:
USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Region - Recreation

I've been photographing aspen along the Peak to Peak Hwy for the past 20+ years. In this area they "usually" begin turning mid-September and peak toward the end of September. Some years we've had color through the first week of October.

Default Aspen Viewing

What are some of your favorite routes and times to go view the Aspens change? Any places you'd suggest to grab a bite along the way?
TIA

You may want to read this other recent thread: https://www.city-data.com/forum/denve...n-viewing.html

Drive along the Peak to Peak Highway any time from the third week to late September. Stop in Nederland for lunch along the way.

Anywhere in Estes Park. Great hikes and doesn't have the crazy amount of tourists from summer time. Mid-Late September is best.

As far as grabbing a bite, there are lots of places in Estes. We tend to favor local establishments, but there is also McDonald's in all its glory.
