I will be moving from Detroit to the South Metro Denver Area (working in Centennial). I am looking for areas to either rent or buy a home in. The plan is to rent for 1 year, then purchase a home shortly after. I have a wife and three children, children are all under 8. Here are my questions:

I want to live at least 30 min's away from Centennial. My new job will be in the 80122 zip code. What are the cities that I could possible move to and only be 30 min's away from my job?

Of these cities, which have the best choice of Elementary schools?

The price range for a home for us would be up to 275k.

Any suggestions?

Why would you want to be at least 30 minutes away?

Describe what would make an elementary school best?

Do you know cross streets for this new job? It could take 20 minutes to go from Dry Creek to Belleview in weather or traffic.

A drive to work that last more than 30 min's seems unbearable to me.

A good Elementary school typically has small student/teacher ratios, good test scores, many choices of student extra-curricular activities. Looking for high rated schools on greatschools.org, like Bear Canyon Elementary.

Location of employment is the Dry Creek/South University area

Centennial and Highlands Ranch are good place to start looking.

I live near Northridge Elementary, jut north of the Bear Canyon Elementary area.

We moved to Centennial (80015) from Metro Detroit 2 years ago. We just purchased our house here after renting for the first year. This is a great area. Love the school, Cherry Creek School District. Shopping and restaurants close by. I can't speak about the other cities, but I do know a lot of people do end up in Highlands Ranch. Good luck and if there is anything I can help with, feel free to ask.

I think you confused people when you said 'I want to live at least 30 min's away from Centennial' Think you meant at most.

I live in 80122 and recommend 80122 as a very good zip code. Why not live where you work? It's an older part of Centennial (although not too old - houses from 50's on) and it's right near the new Streets of Southglenn development which is a very pretty and nice place to visit (hope it stays that way!) so it's still on the cutting edge. Access to downtown is quite easy either driving or using public transit (just a few miles from light rail stations).

School district is Littleton Public Schools which doesn't get as much press as some of the other area districts but it is still top-notch. I had made a pretty detailed post a while back about what I think are the positives/negatives about my part of Centennial (ie 80121/80122 zip codes). Take a look and hopefully you like what you see. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I can see how that sounds very confusing. Let me clarify, I want to stay somewhere that is, at most 30 min's or less away from 80122. I'll look for your other post about Centennial. Once again, thanks.

Theoretically, Greenwood Village is the "best" of all the south metro cities, but it's also the most expensive. W Centennial is a pretty reasonable option that's a lot more affordable to young families. A lot of Tech Center/ Centennial Airport area workers also live in SE Aurora/E Centennial, Parker, Castle Rock, and Littleton/unincorp Jeffco. 80122 is a little bit west of the Tech Center though, so Centennial, Littleton, and Highlands Ranch are all good choices. Maybe decide which school district you like the best and go from there?
